This is an extreme source of anxiety and concern to patients. Male pattern baldness (also known as Androgenetic alopecia) is genetic and affects approximately over 50% of men over the age of 50 years.
Common presenting signs in male pattern baldness include:
- Thinning and or loss of the hair over the temples
- Thinning or loss of hair over the frontal scalp
- Thinninig or loss of hair over the top of the head
Eventually the loss of hair over the frontal scalp extends to involve the top of the scalp leaving the entire front and top of the scalp without any hair.
It is known that high levels of the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in males contributes to the shortening of the hair growth phase, resulting in thinning of the hair until such a time that it is no longer growing from the follicles.
Treatment for this condition is based on reducing the levels of this hormone by giving medications such as Finasteride which prevents or blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) thereby reducing the levels of this hormone in the scalp and interrupting the natural progression of male pattern balding.
